10 Tips to Help You and Your Family Have an Excellent Fourth of July

While Independence Day has only been celebrated as a federal holiday in the U.S. since 1941, the tradition dates back to the 18th Century, the American Revolution, The Declaration of Independence and finally our nation’s freedom from the oppression of Great Britain. The holiday has commonly been associated with fireworks, parades, concerts and food. Today, people celebrate this holiday by eating barbecue, enjoying the day with friends and family, and going to see a fireworks display, among other things.

Here are ten tips to help you have a healthy and safe Independence Day:

1 If you’re spending the day in the sun, make sure to wear sunscreen of at least 15 spf  to guard against dangerous UVB and UVA rays. According to Health Fitness Revolution, sunburns can increase skin cancer by 12 times.

2 Eat Light: Stocking up on junk food is easy to do on holidays. For a healthier Fourth of July, there are many options to avoid filling up too much and feeling heavy  in the heat, which can be a bad combo!

3 Staying hydrated is extremely important when you are outside and in the heat for long periods of time.

4 Plan and enjoy a holiday tradition with friends and family members!

5 If you have sensitive ears, or are looking to get some rest after a long day celebrating, grab some earplugs to protect your ear drums from damage.

6 If you know you’re going to be in the heat for two hours or more and you plan to serve food that spoils, make sure to pack a cooler with ice packs to keep the food from going bad and growing dangerous bacteria. 7 Have you thought about lawn games? Playing golf, bags, football and other activities can help you burn those extra holiday calories, increase endorphins (the happy hormones) and help you bond with other people at the party you attend or host.

8 Stock up on healthy fruits that are in season, organic, and have a low glycemic index. Fruit is also a great alternative to sugary desserts, which can increase blood pressure, lead to sugar spikes and give you only a short-term burst of energy.

9 Choose cucumber water, homemade limeade or lemonade made with agave or stevia instead of sugary sodas and processed juices.

10 Choose a clean grill. A dirty grill can be a breeding ground for bacteria and germs. After you are finished grilling, clean off any visible food debris and let the grill burn a bit .
